To further individualize reading instruction and to assist in meeting the needs of our students, our Reading Support Specialist schedules individuals and small groups of students one to five times a week. Depending upon the requirements of the individual students, the reading support teacher may supplement and reinforce classroom instruction or may provide the main thrust of instruction. The skills taught are phonemic awareness, phonics, reading fluency, and reading comprehension skills. Multisensory techniques are used to reinforce learning. Students are referred for support by the classroom teachers and by the Division Head.
Additional trained Reading Specialists are full-time classroom teachers and provide specialized instruction to students where needed on a daily basis.
Reading Specialists, classroom teachers, and speech/language pathologists consult and work together to maximize student outcomes.
